Allan Watson talks all things boron at Pint of Science Festival

On Monday 13th May 2024, Boron: Beyond the Reagent Co-PI Prof. Allan Watson took part in the Pint of Science Festival held in St Andrews for the first time. The event was titled ‘ABC Stands for Amazing Boron Chemistry’ and Allan gave ‘A Brief History of Almost Everything About Boron’. Dr Hana Jurikova, a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at St Andrews, also spoke about boron at the event - ‘Boron Time Machine: Travelling to past worlds of ice-cold and super greenhouse climate’.

Pint of Science is a grassroots, non-profit organisation which held it’s first festival in 2013. One of the organisation’s missions is to develop a space where audiences are engaged with research; where walls are broken down and everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts, questions and ideas. Over 50 people attended the boron event for what was a fun and engaging evening of science with very positive feedback from attendees.

“Great talks! Very accessible and fun props and demos.”

“As a non-chemist I found everything accessible but interesting”

“Very fun and engaging”

Congratulations to Emily Hanover, City Coordinator for the Pint of Science St Andrews team, for a successful inaugural Pint of Science Festival in the city. Emily is a PhD student based between Edinburgh and St Andrews in the groups of Boron: Beyond the Reagent Co-Is Prof. Michael Ingleson and Prof. Eli Zysman-Colman. Emily is working on new boron containing fluorescent materials.
